Petersburg
Welcome to the NorQuest Seafoods Petersburg
employment web page.
Petersburg is home to one of the longest operating seafood processing
facilities in the state of Alaska. The
original facility at this location was first built in 1903.
At this facility we produce
fresh, frozen and value added seafood products including halibut,
black cod, salmon and salmon roe.
Petersburg
is located on Mitkof Island at the northern tip of Wrangell Narrows.
The town was settled in the 1890’s by Norwegian fishers and their
families and this heritage is very much reflected in present day Petersburg.
Each year the third full weekend in May is Little Norway Festival and
features food and craft booths, dances, a parade and much more.
Visitors to Petersburg during Little Norway are advised to guard their
socks! Wildlife including eagles,
geese, sea lions and seals are plentiful. The
largest concentration of humpback whales is in the area as well.
Year round population is about 3,300 but the summer salmon season brings
in many fishers and workers. Summer
temperatures generally average around 65 degrees.
Petersburg, like all areas of Southeast Alaska does get quite a bit of rain. The annual rainfall average is 110” but half that falls
from October through December so the rest of the year averages around 6” per
month. (For more information please
visit the Petersburg home page at http://www.petersburg.org.)
Production
at NorQuest Petersburg starts in early March with the halibut and black cod season.
Peak season is salmon season when we’ll have over 175 people on the
payroll. Salmon
season runs from late-June through early-September.
Preference in hiring is given to individuals able to commit to
staying on board through September 15. We’re
fortunate in that we participate in all the salmon fisheries and usually have
hatchery contracts as well. This
means we have the best possible likelihood of having a steady sustained volume
of fish to process throughout the summer. For
people that want to work longer we do continue to process seafood from halibut and black cod fisheries well in to November.
NorQuest Petersburg has some housing facilities available in buildings separate from the production facility. We have the capacity to house up to 150 people in two and three person rooms. The cookhouse is located adjacent to the production facility and three meals per day are served there.
The
bunkhouse is a 100% smoke free facility. There is a smoking area in
the covered parking area of the facility. The
bunkhouse is a 24-hour quiet zone. We
have employees living in the bunkhouse who are working nights as well as days.
If you’re on the night shift you’ll appreciate being able to get some
sleep during the day. NorQuest
has a zero tolerance policy for illegal drugs and alcohol in the
bunkhouse. Possession of alcohol on company premises will be grounds
for termination. Possession of
illegal drugs will be grounds for termination and the police will be contacted.
NorQuest seeks to operate and maintain a safe and healthy environment for
our employees and drugs and alcohol are not conducive to this.
There
are two ways to get to Petersburg. The
easiest is to fly. For flight
information and prices please visit Alaska Airlines web site at http://www.alaskair.com
or call them at 1-800-ALASKAAIR. Most
people traveling to Petersburg prefer to take the ferry.
It’s much less expensive and the trip from Bellingham, WA gives a great
tour of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska.
For ferry information please visit the Alaska Marine Highway web site at http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.html
or call them at 1-800-642-0066.
