Ketchikan
Welcome to the NorQuest Seafoods Ketchikan
employment web page. Ketchikan
is home to NorQuest’s largest on-shore processing facility with near
year-round production. We
operate a large processing facility producing fresh, frozen and value added
seafood products. We also
operate a seafood smoking facility, hand cannery, retail store and
separately located cold storage and salmon roe processing facility.
Ketchikan is
located on Revillagigedo Island in the Tongass National Forest.
Revillagigedo Island is about the size of Rhode Island.
Population is a little over 8,000.
Summer temperatures generally range from 50 to 70 degrees.
One thing you can be sure of in Ketchikan is that you will see rain.
Average rainfall is about 155” per year.
Fortunately the summer is the drier time and June only averages a
little over seven inches. Ketchikan,
called the Salmon Capital of the World, is rich in nature and Native
American culture. (For more information please visit the Ketchikan home page at
http://www.visit-ketchikan.com/.)
Although most
sections of the plant do run on a near year-round basis the peak activity
level is for salmon season. Salmon
season runs from late-June through mid-September.
This is the time of year in which we employ the largest number of
seasonal workers, at times topping 250 people on the payroll.
Preference in hiring is given to individuals able to commit to
staying on board through September 15.
We’re fortunate in that we participate in all the salmon fisheries
and usually have hatchery contracts as well.
This means we have the best possible likelihood of having a steady
sustained volume of fish to process throughout the summer.
For people that want to work longer we do continue to process seafood
from the fall fisheries, such as sea cucumbers, geoducks and halibut well in
to November.
NorQuest – Ketchikan built a bunkhouse facility in 1999 directly across
the street from the main processing plant.
We house people in two to four person
sleeping rooms. Bathrooms with
shower facilities are located on each floor.
Three meals per day are served in the galley downstairs.
There is also a recreation area with a television for off times.
Laundry service is provided for employees living in the bunkhouse.
The
bunkhouse is a 100% smoke free facility. There is a smoking area in
the covered parking area of the facility.
The bunkhouse is a 24-hour
quiet zone. We have
employees living in the bunkhouse who are working nights as well as days.
If you’re on the night shift you’ll appreciate being able to get
some sleep during the day. NorQuest
has a zero tolerance policy for illegal drugs and alcohol in the
bunkhouse. Possession of alcohol on company premises will be grounds
for termination. Possession of
illegal drugs will be grounds for termination and the police will be
contacted. NorQuest seeks to
operate and maintain a safe and healthy environment for our employees and
drugs and alcohol are not conducive to this.
There are two
ways to get to Ketchikan. The
easiest is to fly. For flight
information and prices please visit Alaska Airlines web site at http://www.alaskair.com
or call them at 1-800-ALASKAAIR. Most
people traveling to Ketchikan prefer to take the ferry.
It’s much less expensive and the trip from Bellingham, WA gives a
great tour of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska.
For ferry information please visit the Alaska Marine Highway web site
at http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.html
or call them at 1-800-642-0066.
